Lut lived among them, witnessing their transgressions with a heavy heart. A prophet’s duty is to call people to righteousness and warn them against the consequences of their deeds, and Lut was no exception. He stood before his people, imploring them with sincerity, his voice echoing with truth and compassion.
“Do you commit such abominations that no one in the world has ever committed before you?” Lut asked, his tone filled with both sorrow and astonishment. “Indeed, you approach men with lust instead of women. You are a people exceeding all bounds.”
His words were met with ridicule. The people of Sodom mocked him and dismissed his message. “Expel Lut and his followers from your town!” they demanded, their voices filled with arrogance. “These are people who wish to remain pure.”
But Lut was unwavering. He continued to remind them of the consequences of their actions, warning them of Allah’s wrath if they did not repent. Yet, the more he spoke, the more obstinate they became, clinging to their corrupt ways and encouraging one another in sin.
Despite living in a city so morally decayed, Lut found solace in his daughters, who were righteous and obedient. However, his wife, instead of supporting him, was an ally to the disbelievers. She betrayed him, not through open opposition but by aligning herself with the people of Sodom, sharing their disbelief and mocking his prophethood.
The duality of his household weighed heavily on Lut. He prayed fervently to Allah for strength and guidance. He knew that only divine intervention could save him and the few believers who had followed him.
One day, Lut received three handsome young men as guests. Unbeknownst to him, they were angels sent by Allah, disguised as humans, to deliver both glad tidings and a dire warning. Lut, being a generous host, welcomed them into his home and offered them hospitality. However, news of the guests spread quickly through the city, and the wicked men of Sodom, driven by their vile desires, rushed to Lut’s house.
Terrified for the safety of his guests, Lut confronted the mob outside. “These are my guests; do not disgrace me!” he pleaded. “Fear Allah and do not humiliate me in my home.”
The crowd, however, was relentless. “You know well we have no interest in your daughters,” they sneered. “You are fully aware of what we want.”
Lut, overwhelmed by their audacity and his inability to protect his guests, cried out in despair, “If only I had the strength to resist you or some powerful support!”
At this moment, the angels revealed their true identity. “O Lut, do not fear nor grieve,” they assured him. “We are messengers from your Lord. They will never harm you. Leave with your family during the night, and let none of you look back. But your wife will remain behind, for she is among those who will be destroyed.”
The angels also informed Lut that the punishment for the people of Sodom was imminent. The city, with all its corruption, would face divine retribution by dawn.
As the night enveloped Sodom, Lut and his family departed, obeying the angels’ command not to look back. His wife, however, defied this order, her heart tethered to the sinful city and its people. When she turned back, she was struck down, becoming a symbol of those who disbelieve.
As dawn broke, the earth beneath Sodom trembled. The angels lifted the city into the sky and overturned it, hurling it back to the ground. A storm of stones rained upon the inhabitants, obliterating every trace of their existence. The once-thriving city was reduced to a barren wasteland, its ruins serving as a grim reminder of Allah’s justice.
Prophet Lut and the believers were spared, their faith and obedience shielding them from the calamity. As they settled in safety, Lut’s heart was heavy with the knowledge that despite his tireless efforts, the people of Sodom had chosen their fate. Yet, he found solace in the mercy of Allah, who had rescued him and his followers.
The story of Lut (AS) is preserved in the Qur'an as a powerful lesson for humanity. It reminds us of the consequences of ignoring divine guidance and the ultimate justice of Allah. The ruins of Sodom and Gomorrah, believed to be near the Dead Sea, stand as a testament to this tale, cautioning all who pass by to reflect on the fate of those who transgressed.
