Ismail was born to Hajar and Ibrahim after years of his father praying to Allah for a righteous child. His birth brought immense joy, but soon after, Allah commanded Ibrahim to take Hajar and Ismail to the barren desert of Arabia. Ibrahim, ever obedient, left his wife and infant son in the lifeless valley, trusting completely in Allah’s plan.
Hajar, though initially concerned, displayed immense faith when Ibrahim explained that it was Allah’s command. She asked, "Has Allah commanded you to do this?" When Ibrahim affirmed, she replied, "Then He will not abandon us." This trust in Allah became the cornerstone of her survival and Ismail’s early life.
As days passed, their provisions ran out. Hajar, desperate to find water for her crying infant, ran back and forth between the hills of Safa and Marwa seven times, searching for help. Her perseverance was rewarded when Allah miraculously caused the spring of Zamzam to gush forth near Ismail’s feet. This blessed water not only sustained them but later attracted a tribe, Jurhum, who settled in the area, laying the foundation of the city of Makkah.
Ismail grew up among the Jurhum tribe, learning their language and culture, and becoming known for his strong character and devotion to Allah. He assisted his mother and contributed to the community, earning respect for his uprightness. Ismail’s life was deeply intertwined with faith, as his mother often reminded him of the divine blessings they had received.
He developed a close bond with his father, Prophet Ibrahim, who frequently visited him despite living far away. These visits not only strengthened their relationship but also reinforced their shared mission of devotion to Allah.
One of the most profound moments in Ismail’s life came when Allah tested Ibrahim with a dream. In this vision, Ibrahim saw himself sacrificing his beloved son. As a prophet, Ibrahim knew this was not a mere dream but a command from Allah. Though deeply pained, he resolved to fulfill Allah’s decree.
When Ibrahim approached Ismail to share the vision, his son’s response was a testament to his submission to Allah’s will. The Quran captures Ismail’s reply:
"O my father, do as you are commanded. You will find me, if Allah wills, of the steadfast." (Surah As-Saffat 37:102)
This incredible exchange highlights the unwavering faith of both father and son. They journeyed to the designated place of sacrifice, and as Ibrahim prepared to carry out the act, Allah, in His mercy, intervened. He replaced Ismail with a ram and declared that the sacrifice had already been accepted.
The Quran describes this moment:
"Indeed, this was the clear trial. And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice." (Surah As-Saffat 37:106-107)
This event is commemorated annually by Muslims during Eid al-Adha, symbolizing submission to Allah and the spirit of sacrifice.
Another defining chapter in Ismail’s life was his role in constructing the Kaaba alongside his father. Allah instructed Ibrahim to build a house for His worship, and Ibrahim sought Ismail’s help. Together, they raised the foundations of the sacred structure, dedicating it to the worship of Allah alone.
As they worked, they prayed earnestly:
"Our Lord, accept [this] from us. Indeed, You are the Hearing, the Knowing." (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:127)
The construction of the Kaaba marked the establishment of a center for monotheism, a beacon for generations to come. Ismail’s participation in this monumental task underscored his commitment to Allah’s mission.
Prophet Ismail’s life continued to be one of devotion and service. He became a prophet and called people to the worship of Allah, embodying the virtues of patience, humility, and obedience. His lineage would later include the final prophet, Muhammad (peace be upon him), linking Ismail directly to the advent of Islam.
